What sets us apart from other publishers?

  • We believe in publishing work that has a positive impact on the world.
  • We believe in rewarding authors with a fair share of the proceeds from their work.
  • We try hard to maximise the impact our books through the active onward sale of translation and distribution rights.

Why Paulownia Press?

We get asked this question a lot. Well, it's because the Paulownia tree is native to East Asia and it produces beautiful strong and reliable wood that lasts and lasts ... and because many of our books have aspects of Japan and East Asia as their subject matter ... and we aim to publish books whose impact will last and last ... we wanted to have a name that is evocative of that region and those values.

In Japan the paulownia tree is traditionally used in the manufacture of long-lasting furniture for the long-term storage of kimono. It doesn't warp and, when used well, it keeps out the damp. It is said that a family will plant a paulownia tree on the occasion of the birth of a daughter. When the daughter marries, her father will chop down the tree and make a dresser as a wedding present for the couple and in which the bride will store her clothes for the rest of her life.

So, please take some time to look around our site and, if there is anything we can do for you as an author or reader, please get in touch right away!
